Birthday party decoration trends

Looking for birthday decoration ideas for kids parties? Current trends include amazing balloons, old fashioned bunting, paper fan features, and printable party decoration kits. Here’s a great list of party decoration ideas that you can DIY at home.

Do you love decorating for your kids’ birthday parties? I do! You can have so much fun creating a colourful, fun space for the kids to play in. But not everyone is a creative genius who can come up with decorating ideas all by themselves. For that, we have Pinterest! Here’s a quick summary of the best decorating trends that you can DIY at home.

Basic Balloons

Nothing fills a room with colour better than balloons! Whether floating loose or tied together in bunches, using balloons is one of the easiest ways to decorate. But there is a catch…transporting helium balloons takes up lots of space, and they’re easy to pop. So consider getting them delivered. It’s well worth the money to save you hassle.

If you don’t want to fill up your whole room with balloons, you can tie them to a weight in bunches of 3 to 5. Have each balloon standing at a different height, and place them around the room, or on your tables as centrepieces.

Another decoration idea is to tie a balloon to each child’s chair or party bag. Not only do they look great, but they can be taken home as party favours.

Fancy Balloon Decorations

Balloon decoration has reached new heights in recent years. You can now buy giant, confetti filled balloons with tassel strings, giant walking character balloons, or have whole balloon walls erected. So if you have a little extra budget, head to Pinterest, search ‘balloon decoration’ and get inspired! Then ask your local balloon shop whether they can provide you with something similar.

Bunting

Bunting is back in vogue, and comes in all kinds of shapes and sizes. You can pretty much turn anything into bunting – photos, cut-out shapes, paper flags, pom poms, doilies. Just lay out your items in an order that’s appealing, then thread or hot-glue them to ribbon or string. Search ‘bunting DIY’ on Pinterest for project ideas. Alternatively, your local party shop will have a wide range of bunting available.

Bunting looks great hung across doorways, windows and along the edges of your tables.

Paper Fans and Balls

Another current birthday decoration trend is the use of paper fans and balls. You can buy these readily from party suppliers, or make them yourself (head back to Pinterest for instructions).

Create a wall feature by sticking lots of folded out paper fans directly to the wall. This will look great behind a food table or candy buffet. You might like to lay out your fan arrangement on the table first, before sticking it to the wall using blue-tack or removable adhesive strips.

Hang fold-out paper lanterns and honeycomb balls from your ceiling, or in the trees outdoors. For best effect, hang them in groups rather than spread out throughout the house.

Calligraphy cake toppers

These are all the rage at the moment and a great way to add a bit of style to your cake. You can buy them already printed with things like happy birthday or you can get them custom printed. They also don’t cost an arm and a leg and are a fun way to personalise your party! You can find them on etsy and some cute ones here from poshtoppers.com.au.

Floral table arrangements

Nothing brightens up a table more than flowers. Visit your local market to get some fresh beautiful flowers for a fraction of the cost. Then throw them in cheap jars, vases or glass bowls to make your table blossom! If you want to get fancy you can paint the jars and put glitter on them. There are so many ideas on pinterst on floral arrangements. These are also great for older kids who are wanting something a bit more sophisticated for their party themes. The cover photo for this blog is some gorgeous floral arrangements from catchmyparty.com

Printable Decorations

Now that most of us have easy access to a computer and printer, printable party decorations have taken off. These are digital files that you download, print and assemble yourself, and can include party signage, bunting, cake toppers, bag labels and more. The great thing about party printables is you’ll find almost any theme imaginable. So if you’re having a ‘rose coloured unicorn’ themed party, you’re bound to find something that perfectly matches!

You’ll find a huge array of printables for sale on Etsy.com, and many of these can be personalised to include your child’s name.

Now that you’ve got lots of party decoration ideas to get started with sorted, it’s time to think about the entertainment. Have you considered hosting a jewellery making party? Check out what we have to offer.
